Meaning and significance.
The Qalam
The Reed Pen
as a Symbol.
The Qalam has been a central symbol of knowledge, insight, and responsibility in Islamic scholarship since the earliest centuries.
It represents the pursuit of knowledge, its careful preservation, and the transmission of insight in science, medicine, and ethics. In the Islamic tradition, knowledge is never an end in itself but is always bound to responsibility and accountability.
Surah Luqman 31:27
“And if all the trees on earth were pens and the sea were ink, replenished by seven more seas, the Words of Allah would not be exhausted.”
This verse reminds us that human knowledge – however valuable it may be – always remains limited, while divine knowledge is inexhaustible. From this awareness arise humility and modesty in the pursuit of knowledge, especially in medicine.
Symbolism in Detail
Qalam, Water, and Capsule
The depiction of the Qalam emerging from water draws upon this imagery: knowledge springs from a source greater than humankind itself. Medical practice is therefore always embedded in the recognition of one’s own limitations and in dependence upon Allah’s support.
The capsule as an enclosing form represents healing, protection, and therapeutic responsibility. It also signifies that Shifāʾ (healing) is ultimately not solely the result of human action but is granted by Allah.
Medical practice, in the Islamic understanding, means employing means responsibly – with the awareness that the success of these means does not lie within human control.
