The pledge of Muslim healthcare professionals.
The Hippocratic Oath
A tradition of ethical responsibility
The Hippocratic Oath remains to this day a defining symbol of medical responsibility. It stands for fundamental values such as care, respect, conscientiousness, and the commitment to place the well-being of the patient at the center of all actions.
As Muslim healthcare professionals, we build upon this ethical tradition and have developed our own pledge – as guidance from an Islamic perspective. It unites medical responsibility toward people with spiritual responsibility toward Allah.
The Pledge
Our Oath
I swear by Allah, the Most High,
the Protector and Guardian, the Sustainer and Provider, the All-Knowing and the Teacher, that as a healthcare professional I am always mindful that healing comes from Him alone and that I am merely an instrument of that healing.
I place my trust in Him and hold firm to my conviction in His mercy. I purify my intentions and actions and strive to wear the garment of purity and sincerity.
I practice my profession in full awareness that I shall be rewarded in this life and the hereafter.
I will treat every patient with dignity and respect and do everything in my power to promote their health and well-being. I shall neither favor nor disadvantage patients on the basis of their origin, nationality, religion, social standing, or gender.
I will treat the poor and the vulnerable with the same conscientiousness and care as all other patients.
I will continually expand, deepen, and renew my knowledge of healing methods in order to practice the art of medicine in accordance with scientific standards and in harmony with the laws of Islam.
In this, scholarship and knowledge represent high virtues that I pledge to always cultivate.
May Allah, the Most High, bless me in this endeavor and help me fulfill my duties in accordance with His pleasure.
