The Challenge
Between Aspiration and System
Throughout our education and professional careers, we repeatedly become aware that the practice of medicine is associated with a particular worldview. On the one hand, we learn a naturalistic interpretation of the natural sciences; on the other, a strongly economically oriented view of the healthcare system.
We learn to evaluate our actions not only from a scientific and ethical perspective but consistently against the backdrop of economic efficiency – assigning it the highest priority.
The Moral Conflict
Rediscovering Our Own Values
Against the backdrop of these perspectives, we as Muslims often feel burdened by the sense that we must set aside – or even abandon – our own ethical values in order to succeed. We frequently experience a moral conflict that not infrequently leads us to relegate our own values to the background.
HAKIM e.V. seeks to address precisely this issue, reawakening the self-confidence of Muslim healthcare professionals and their trust in their own values. It was through the confident adherence to these values that Muslims led the way in medicine and the natural sciences for several centuries.
Muslim healthcare professionals shall be given the tools to navigate through the barrage of ideas pressing upon them (capitalism, individualism, naturalism, etc.) and to evaluate them in the light of their own Islamic values.
Al-An’ám: 162
﴿قُلْ إِنَّ صَلاتِي وَنُسُكِي وَمَحْيايَ وَمَماتِي لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعالَمِينَ﴾
“Say: Indeed, my prayer, my sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of all the worlds.”
