About HAKIM
What does HAKIM stand for?
HAKIM stands for the Council of Muslim Physicians and Healthcare Professionals. The name derives from the Arabic word Hakím (“the Wise”), historically used for scholars and physicians who united knowledge and wisdom.
What is the vision of HAKIM?
Our vision: Muslim physicians speak for themselves. We aim to be a lasting, professional institution at the intersection of Islam, medicine, and society – a point of reference that cannot be overlooked when relevant questions arise.
What does SHIFA mean?
SHIFA summarizes our mission in one word. Each letter stands for a pillar of our work:
- SH – Constant Support (Ständige Hilfestellung): We serve as a point of contact for questions at the intersection of Islam, medicine, and society.
- I – Advocacy (Interessensvertretung): We represent the interests of Muslim healthcare professionals and patients.
- F – Development (Förderung): We build expertise, strengthen professionals, and nurture the next generation.
- A – Education (Aufklärung): We explain Islamic perspectives on health topics clearly and responsibly.
What type of organization is HAKIM?
HAKIM e.V. is a registered association (eingetragener Verein) based in Hamburg. You can find more information about our organizational structure and charter on our organization page.
Where is HAKIM based?
HAKIM e.V. is a registered association based in Hamburg. However, our members and activities extend across all of Germany.
Is HAKIM only for physicians?
No. By “physicians” we deliberately refer to the most visible group in healthcare. What we mean, however, is the entire spectrum of Muslim healthcare professionals – including nurses, therapists, psychologists, pharmacists, paramedics, and others.
How can I get involved with HAKIM?
There are several ways:

Our Projects
What is SAKINA?
SAKINA is our project for Islam-based psychological support. SAKINA consists of a multidisciplinary team and aims to provide a platform for engaging with the topic of Islam and psychology. Our current focus is on education, training, and networking.
What is HAKIM-Campus?
HAKIM-Campus is the heart of our work with the next generation. It focuses specifically on students and trainees in the healthcare professions. The goal is to prepare the next generation of professionals to actively shape the vision of HAKIM – through mentoring, networking, and ethical reflection.
What is the Ramadan Compendium?
The Ramadan Compendium is our medical guide to fasting during Ramadan. It is aimed at healthcare professionals and patients alike, and covers topics such as medication intake, chronic conditions, and practical recommendations for healthy fasting.
Does SAKINA offer individual counseling?
Currently, SAKINA focuses primarily on education, training, and networking. We are unfortunately unable to offer individual counseling at this time. If this changes, we will announce it here and on the SAKINA page.
Events
What types of events does HAKIM organize?
We organize various formats: conferences, workshops, webinars, and Iftar events. Topics range from medical-ethical issues to professional development and networking. Current dates can be found on our events page.
Who can attend events?
Most of our events are open to the public. Some formats such as mentoring programs or internal workshops may be restricted to members. Details can be found with each event listing.
